In Part One of our John Carter update a few weeks ago, we brought you up to speed with the film, John Carter the character, and the two trailers released so far – which were pretty damn good.
Now, in Part Two, we have the poster artwork and official images. The posters might be particularly interesting to any marketing types out there because they have gone for two very different looks. But which one is best?
.
Here are the posters (click to enlarge):
The first poster (left) looks like it could easily have come off the cover of the original Edgar Rice Burroughs novel, A Princess of Mars – or at least a 70’s reprint. It’s pretty cool but does it really work for what is surely a very mainstream movie? I guess it’s designed to draw in fans of the books and comic adaptations.
The second poster (right) is clearly designed to appeal to the masses. I like that it’s not the in your face ‘hero shot’ other blockbuster artwork seems to go for – instead focussing on a scene from the film, where our hero appears to be in big trouble. But does it really do the film justice and offer that WOW factor to draw audiences in?

Here are the official images (click to enlarge):
These bring you the main characters and some of the epic backdrops we’ll see in the film, and complement the trailers in that way, but I would like to have seen more of the action which, judging by the trailers, is the mainstay of the film. Still, it’s early days and there’ll be heaps more before March. One thing’s for sure, John Carter will be very pretty to look at. But will it offer us anything more? Time will tell.
.
So have our updates got you interested in John Carter? What other classic novel characters would you like to see on screen (that we haven’t already)?
Directed by Andrew Stanton, John Carter stars Taylor Kitsch (Snakes on a Plane), Lynn Collins (23), Samantha Morton (River Queen), Mark Strong (Kick Ass), Ciaran Hinds (Munich), Dominic West (300), James Purefoy (Ironclad), Bryan Cranston (Drive), Polly Walker (Clash of the Titans), Daryl Sabara (Spy Kids), Thomas Haden Church (Sideways) and Willem Dafoe (Spiderman).
John Carter hits New Zealand screens on 8 March, 2012.
