Super Bowl commercials are almost as highly anticipated as the Super Bowl itself. Film stars, musicians and dancing M&Ms all pushed product this past Monday (NZT). However some of the world’s most expensive airtime was taken over by the movie blockbusters coming our way – with studios forking out around $3.5 million USD for every 30 seconds required. With a viewing audience of over 100 million in the US alone, I guess you could say that’s still a bargain?
One of the downsides of watching the Super Bowl in New Zealand is that you don’t get to see these spots. Fortunately we have them all here for you to enjoy…
Here are this year’s Super Bowl spots:
.
The Avengers
This superhero combo film looks set to be one the biggest blockbusters of the year. But will their powers combined produce one of the greatest action films of all time?
When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, Director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. Spanning the globe, a daring recruitment effort begins.
.
Battleship
This is looking more like Transformers every single day. But hey, at least there’s some semblance of plot emerging.
A fleet of ships is forced to do battle with an armada of unknown origins in order to discover and thwart their destructive goals.
.
The Hunger Games
The publicity machine for the next teen novel sensation is well and truly ramping up. Despite looking like watered down Battle Royale, I’ll watch this film because of the incredibly talented Jennifer Lawrence.
Every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the evil Capitol of the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games. A twisted punishment for a past uprising and an ongoing government intimidation tactic, The Hunger Games are a nationally televised event in which “Tributes” must fight with one another until one survivor remains.
.
John Carter
It’s no surprise that this Disney blockbuster wanted its piece of the Super Bowl pie.
The story of war-weary, former military captain John Carter, who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet. In a world on the brink of collapse, Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes that the survival of Barsoom (Mars) and its people rests in his hands.
.
The Lorax
The lastest big screen Dr Suess incarnation continues look like a fun-filled ride.
The journey of a 12-year-old as he searches for the one thing that will enable him to win the affection of the girl of his dreams. To find it he must discover the story of the Lorax, the grumpy yet charming creature who fights to protect his world.
.
21 Jump Street
Comedic reboots of classic TV shows haven’t worked out too well so far. But with Jonah Hill starring, we may be in luck here.
Schmidt and Jenko are more than ready to leave their adolescent problems behind. Joining the police force and the secret Jump Street unit, they use their youthful appearances to go undercover in a local high school. As they trade in their guns and badges for backpacks, Schmidt and Jenko risk their lives to investigate a violent and dangerous drug ring.
.
The Dictator
Will Sacha Baron Cohen tickle our funny bone yet again? The jury’s still out on this one.
The heroic story of a dictator who risks his life to ensure that democracy would never come to the country he so lovingly oppressed.
.
G.I. Joe: Retaliation
This sequel to the decidedly average G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra gets a boost (at least in my book) by having Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Bruce Willis on board.
The G.I. Joes are not only fighting their mortal enemy Cobra; they are forced to contend with threats from within the government that jeopardize their very existence.

So which was your favourite movie spot? Do you think a slot in the Super Bowl schedule is worth the price of admission?
