In Sound of My Voice a journalist and his girlfriend get pulled in while they investigate a cult whose leader claims to be from the future. Fox Searchlight has finally released a trailer for this 2011 Sundance darling which suggests that the hype is seriously well-founded.

This is the first feature film for director Zal Batmangli which he co-wrote with the amazing actress/writer Brit Marling of Another Earth indie-fame. All the actors look great in the trailer, but Marling as the cult leader completely stands out – how perfectly childlike and wise, with her sad soft voice. See for yourself:

Wow. You’re welcome. I love all the little mysteries they’ve fit into this trailer; it’s totally creepy and intriguing but with characters at its heart. Aesthetically very pleasing also – with shades of Martha Marcy May Marlene and New Zealand TV show The Cult.

As with Marling’s other writing/acting credit Another Earth I think it’s great that Sound of My Voice is receiving coverage through it’s acclaim; based on solid story and characters, as opposed to millions of dollars and special effects (sorry John Carter). It’s unfortunate there’s no New Zealand release date yet, because this is one of those trailers that has you wanting to see the film when everyone else does. Let’s hope we don’t have to wait too long!
