Wellington-based filmmaker Alex Galvin’s first feature film When Night Falls garnered excellent reviews and gained an international distribution deal. Now Galvin is back with his second feature, the sci-fi mystery Eternity. Judging by these stunning images, he’s once again turned a film with a limited budget into one that looks like it was shot for several million.

In Eternity a police detective (Elliot Travers) must enter a virtual world and solve a seemingly unsolvable crime in order to redeem his reputation. But the simulation offers more than he bargained for and soon it’s not just his career that’s on the line, but his very existence.

The film was shot in Wellington, Kapiti Coast, the Hawke’s Bay and Hong Kong, which I believe makes it the first ever New Zealand – Hong Kong co-production. The film’s cast features talented newbies (including Elliot Travis), Kiwi vets (like Geraldine Brophy), and a Hong Kong actress who was also a Miss Hong Kong runner-up (Amy Tsang).

I’m impressed with the quality of the imagery. This will be one good looking film. Although the images show none of action, the cast of characters look engaging. The teaser trailer is about to be released, so we won’t have long to wait to see our first actual footage.

Eternity is a sci-fi mystery, set in the near future. A police detective, Richard Manning, is taking part in a futuristic computer game investigating the most difficult case of his career: a seemingly impossible locked room murder mystery of a wealthy property investor.

The more he investigates, the more complex the case seems to become. Richard begins to realize that there is far more going on than just one mystery, and his own future is at stake. His only chance to escape the game depends on him solving everything – and quickly.

Directed by Alex Galvin, the film stars Elliot Travers, Dean Knowsley, Amy Tsang, Geraldine Brophy, Liz Kirkman Ralph Johnson, Simon Vincent, and Jessica Manins.

Eternity is due to be released either late 2012 or early 2013. We’ll keep you posted when a release date comes to hand.
