Imagine winning a grant of $500,000 USD for your next production. Then imagine that production being produced by Ridley Scott and Michael Fassbender. Well, three Kiwi short films are in the hunt for this incredible prize having made the semi-finals of the Your Film Festival – and you can help them win!

Selected from over 15,000 shorts, from 160 countries, the 50 semi-finalists are now screening on the festival’s YouTube channel – with public voting is open until July 14 (NZT). The top ten films will open this year’s Venice Film Festival, where the Grand Prize winner will be announced.

The Your Film Festival is presented by YouTube and Emirates, in partnership with the Venice Film Festival and Scott Free.

Das Tub (James Cunningham)

Lost in the frozen depths of the Atlantic a German U-Boat crew find themselves on a collision course with objects stranger than they can fathom. The truth leaves them bathed in confusion in this submarine drama of domestic proportions.

A live action and computer graphic animated short film from the Graduate Diploma of Advanced 3D Productions course at New Zealand’s Media Design School. With a script by celebrated New Zealand screenwriter Nick Ward, this film was made by a team of five digital artists in just eight weeks.

Dr Grordbort Presents: The Deadliest Game (James Cunningham)

Lord Broadforce is showing off his collection methods of rare Venusian wildlife – all guns blazing! This sci-fi adventure on Venus is based on the world of Dr Grordbort by Greg Broadmore (from Weta Workshop).

This live action/CGI production was created by 11 students over 22 weeks at New Zealand’s Media Design School, under the direction of 3D Animation Program Leader James Cunningham.

Ebony Society (Tammy Davis)

One night out stealing, two boys learn a lesson.

This New Zealand Film Commission funded short, by writer/director Tammy Davis, was selected for several major film festivals in 2011, including Sundance and Berlin.
