After a decidedly mixed reaction to Prometheus, fans are now hoping Rian Johnson‘s Looper will be this year’s next big sci-fi hit. Both the teaser and US trailers showed promise. But this new international trailer blows them out of the water.

Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a hitman who disposes of people from the future. Young and rich, he has a great life – until his world gets turned upside down when his latest eliminatee turns out to be his future self (Bruce Willis).

Time travel can prove tricky – for filmmakers, as well as characters. Can Johnson (Brick, The Brothers Bloom) breath new life into this slightly tired sub-genre? Based on what we see here, he may well do. Even if the time travel component yet again asks more questions than it answers, Looper looks like it’ll be one heck of a ride.

There are some exciting and unexplained things going on here. What’s with the floating furniture? Who is the Rainmaker? It’s good that not everything’s been given away – something Johnson insisted on. Both Willis and Gordon-Levitt look the business, and even Jeff Daniel’s looks great as a crime boss (at least that what he appears to be).

All and all, Looper is shaping up nicely. Can’t wait to see it.

Pretty cool huh?

In the futuristic action thriller Looper, time travel will be invented – but it will be illegal and only available on the black market. When the mob wants to get rid of someone, they will send their target 30 years into the past, where a “looper” – a hired gun, like Joe – is waiting to mop up. Joe is getting rich and life is good… until the day the mob decides to “close the loop,” sending back Joe’s future self for assassination.

Written and directed by Rian Johnson (Brick, The Brothers Bloom), the film stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, Emily Blunt, Paul Dano and Jeff Daniels.

Looper jumps onto our screens on September 27, 2012.
