Zack Synder‘s Man of Steel set this year’s Comic-Con alight. The footage shown at the convention was given ‘two thumbs up’ by pretty much everyone in attendance. Yesterday Warner Bros. released two teaser trailers for the film, so now it’s our chance to see what all the fuss is about.

It’s our first real look at Henry Cavill as Superman, with this first footage focusing on his alter ego Clark Kent – searching the world, finding out who he really is. We see Kent the fisherman and Kent the drifter. But fear not, the ‘Man of Steel’ makes an appearance at the end – a mouth-watering shot of him screaming through the clouds, complete with sonic boom.

The trailers are identical, except for the stirring speeches used as voice-over – one featuring Jor-El (Russell Crowe) and the other Jonathan Kent (Kevin Costner).

So Clark, who’s your daddy?

The good: The film looks and sounds amazing. It already has the feel of an epic, character-driven drama. Visually you can see Executive Producer Christoper Nolan‘s influence – the gritty look and muted colour pallet. And how about about that final shot of Superman doing his thing? Doesn’t that give you chills?

The bad: This is not the full Comic-Con footage. We only get one shot of Superman, and there’s no Lois Lane (Amy Adams) or General Zod (Michael Shannon). Ok, the Comic-Con version only showed them briefly… but I still think we have cause to feel a little hard done by.

These teasers are great though and make me want to see more …like right now!

The award for the most stirring speech goes to Costner or Crowe? Should they have released the Comic-Con version?

Clark Kent/Kal-El is a young twenty-something journalist who feels alienated by powers beyond anyone’s imagination. Transported to Earth years ago from Krypton, an advanced alien planet, Clark struggles with the ultimate question – Why am I here? Shaped by the values of his adoptive parents Martha and Jonathan Kent, Clark soon discovers that having super abilities means making very difficult decisions. But when the world needs stability the most, it comes under attack. Will his abilities be used to maintain peace or ultimately used to divide and conquer? Clark must become the hero known as “Superman,” not only to shine as the world’s last beacon of hope but to protect the ones he loves.

Directed by Zack Snyder, the film stars Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Kevin Costner, Russell Crowe, Diane Lane, Michael Shannon, Christopher Meloni, Laurence Fishburne, Antje Traue and Dylan Sprayberry.

Man of Steel flys into New Zealand cinemas on June 13, 2013.
