This beautifully framed image is our first look at the great Hugh Laurie in the big-screen adaptation of the beloved Lloyd Jones novel Mister Pip, written and directed by Oscar-nominated Kiwi director Andrew Adamson (Shrek, Chronicles of Narnia). Little more is known about the production but it’s great to see Hugh back on the big screen, after finishing up his iconic TV role as Dr. Gregory House. Renowned Kiwi actress Kerry Fox (An Angel at My Table) plays Laurie’s wife in the film, Mrs Watts.

Here’s the official synopsis: “Living under the shadow of the Papa New Guinean civil war, an eccentric schoolteacher (Laurie) forms a unique bond with a young girl (Xzannjah Matsi) over their shared love for Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations.”

Mister Pip premieres at the Toronto Film Festival in September. No news yet on a New Zealand release date, but expect it to be picked up for distribution after the fest. Laurie will follow up Mister Pip with an as yet undisclosed role in the RoboCop reboot, scheduled for release in 2013.

You keen to see Mister Pip on the big screen? Is Hugh Laurie a great piece of casting?
