Another week, another plethora of movies to choose from. Two (yes, two!) Kiwi docos, a dark satire (slash killing spree), a World War II drama, two (what, only two?!) Bollywood films, and the return of a Pixar classic in 3D are just a cross-section of the cinematic goodness on offer.

THE LAST DOGS OF WINTER……FILM OF THE WEEK

New Zealand | 97 minutes | Director: Costa Botes (Forgotten Silver)

Once upon a time, an expat Kiwi actor journeyed to the end of the earth (well, deepest snowiest Canada) to work with a controversial eccentric trying to save a rare Eskimo dog. What started off as a month’s work turned into a three year love-affair (no, not with the man!) which continues to this day. This Costa Botes doco enthralled audiences at this year’s New Zealand International Film Festival.

FINDING NEMO 3D

USA, Australia | 100 minutes | Director: Andrew Stanton (WALL.E), Lee Unkrich (Monsters Inc.)

“Just keep swimming. Just keep swimming. But keep swimming in 3D!”  Yep, this classic Pixar charmer gets a three-dimensional makeover too. And who wasn’t charmed the first time they saw Marlin the Clownfish, and his forgetful friend, searching for his missing son Nemo? It’s a big ocean… so go see this on the big screen.

.

GOD BLESS AMERICA

USA | 105 minutes | Director: Bobcat Goldthwait (World’s Greatest Dad)

Natural Born Killers with a pop-culture twist and directed by a comedian called Bobcat. How could this possibly misfire?! Frank, a man with little to live for, meets a young girl named Roxy and together they embark on a killing spree, targeting Amercia’s most annoying celebrities – sounds like something we’d all like to do… (KIDDING!).

.

HYSTERIA

UK | 100 minutes | Director: Tanya Wexler (Ball in the House)

A rom-com period piece, starring Maggie Gyllenhaal, about the world’s first electro-mechanical vibrator. What else is there to say?

.

INTERSEXION

New Zealand | 68 minutes | Director: Grant Lahood (Kombi Nation)

Yet another Kiwi-made doco that dares to show a slice of life most of us know little about; this time following the unconventional lives of intersex individuals and how they cope with the world.

.

WUNDERKINDER

Germany | 96 minutes | Director: Markus Rosenmuller (Stilles Tal)

WWII drama about three musically gifted children (two Jewish siblings and one German girl) living in the Ukraine during the Nazi invasion. Music and Drama – not a musical drama.

.

HIT AND RUN

USA | 100 minutes | Director: Dax Shepard (Brother’s Justice), David Palmer (Brother’s Justice)

Cars, crashes and Kristen Bell. Dax Shepard plays as an ex-getaway driver who leaves witness protection and goes on the run (with girlfriend in tow), being chased by a former convict buddy (Bradley Cooper) and the law (Tom Arnold).

Films opening tomorrow:

AJJ DE RANJHE

India | 160 minutes | Director: Manmohan Singh

A Hindi rom-com that’s apparently ‘a satirical take on the state of the youth and law & order systems of Punjab’ – though it’s hard to tell without English subtitles on the trailer. However it sure features some spiffy turbans and equally spiffy facial hair.

.

RAAZ 3 3D

India | 139 minutes | Director: Vikram Bhalt

Bollywood horror about a fading diva, a young starlet and the dark arts; complete with creepy clowns and (quite possibly) even creepier dancing.
