Words on paper and in song feature this week. And so does Liam Neeson, who prefers to let his fists do the talking.

With a drama, a comedy, a doco and an action-blockbuster on display… I think it’s safe to say you might find something to watch.

Here are films opening today:

.

SEARCHING FOR SUGAR MAN……FILM OF THE WEEK

Sweden, UK | 86 minutes | Documentary | Director: Malik Bendjelloul (feature debut)

Two South Africans set out to discover what became of their musical idol Sixto Rodriguez, a Mexican-American who never knew of his cult status in the ‘rainbow nation’ and reportedly met his tragic end by setting himself alight on stage. The less you know about this doco before going in, the better (suffice to say it’s brilliant and you’ll want to buy the soundtrack) – so we won’t even show you a trailer… just a clip.

.

TAKEN 2

USA | 94 minutes | Action | Director: Olivier Megaton (Colombiana, Transporter 3)

Liam Neeson’s Bryan Mills is like Bruce Willis’ John McClane – the same things keep happening over and over again, poor chap. Fortunately Mills, like McClane, has a certain set of skills to help him cope with the situation.

.

THE WORDS

USA | 102 minutes | Romantic Drama | Directors: Brian Klugman & Lee Sternthal (feature debuts)

Bradley Cooper sure likes playing a writer, hey. This time instead of taking a pill to help him complete his literary masterpiece, he just plagiarizes someone else’s work.

The film opening tomorrow:

.

AIYYAA

India | 152 minutes | Romantic Comedy | Director: Sachin Kundalkar (Ganha)

Bollywood sure likes to make comedies that are two hours plus… and trailers without English subtitles. It looks entertaining though.
