Good grief! There are some outstanding films this week – making our choice for ‘film of the week’ an unenviable task. Will it be Tim Burton’s return to stop-motion animation, Ken Loach’s whiskey-laced comedy, the indie time travel gem or Brad Pitt’s stylish gangster flick? Whichever we choose, the others will come ‘highly recommended’.

.

Here are the films opening today:

.

KILLING THEM SOFTLY……FILM OF THE WEEK

USA | 97 minutes | Crime Comedy Drama | Director: Andrew Dominik (Chopper, The Assassination of Jessie James by the Coward Robert Ford)

A stylish and cool gangster flick starring Brad Pitt, James Gandolfini and Ben Mendlesohn… they should make it a crime not to see this!

.

FRANKENWEENIE……HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

USA | 87 minutes | Animation | Director: Tim Burton (Edward Scissorhands, Corpse Bride)

Tim Burton. Stop motion. ‘Nuff said.

.

SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED……HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

USA | 85 minutes | Comedy | Director: Colin Trevorrow (feature debut)

Would you travel through time with a supermarket clerk named Kenneth? After watching this trailer, you can sign me up!

.

THE ANGELS’ SHARE……HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

UK, France, Belgium, Italy | 101 minutes | Comedy | Director: Ken Loach (The Wind that Shakes the Barley)

This gem of a comedy about whiskey and petty crims charmed audiences at this year’s NZIFF. For our review from the fest, click here.

.

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 4

USA | 95 minutes | Horror | Directors: Henry Joost, Ariel Schulman (Paranormal Activity 3, Catfish)

Can this put the franchise back in touch with the other side, or is this a seance we shouldn’t attend?

.

LOVE

USA | 84 minutes | Sci Fi, Drama, Music | Director: William Eubank (feature debut)

2001 meets Moon meets Solaris meets Tree of Life. The trailer looks sensational but reviews have been less than kind. Approach with caution?

.

LED ZEPPELIN: CELEBRATION DAY

UK | 124 minutes | Concert | Director: Dick Carruthers (Oasis: There and Then)

One for fans and music lovers alike by the looks of it.

.

STUDENT OF THE YEAR

India | 146 minutes |  Comedy Romance Biography | Director: Karan Johar (My Name is Khan)

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Bollywood sure love their 2+ hour rom coms… and trailers without subtitles.
