Awards Season is well under way Stateside, as the run-up to the Oscars continues.

Kathryn Bigelow’s film about the manhunt for Osama bin Laden, Zero Dark Thirty, Michael Haneke’s Palme d’Or winning Amour and Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master have all staked claim to Oscar glory at next year’s Academy Awards in February.

The New York Film Critics Online, Los Angeles Film Critics and Boston Society of Film Critics have all announced their awards for 2012. In New York and Boston, Zero Dark Thirty won both Best Picture and the Best Director (for Bigelow). Amour won for Best Picture in LA, with Paul Thomas Anderson picking up Best Director for The Master – with The Master also recognised as runner up for Best Picture.

Amour‘s leading lady Emmanuelle Riva swept the board for Best Actress – although she tied with Jennifer Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook) in Los Angeles. No nod for Zero Dark Thirty‘s Jessica Chastain despite high praise for her strong performance. Riva’s turn as an elderly lady who suffers a stroke is sensational though, so it’s no surprise she took top honours.

Steven Spielberg’s Civil War epic Lincoln also took home several awards, including Best Actor for Daniel Day Lewis in New York and Boston, Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress (for Sally Field) in Boston, and Best Supporting Actor (for Tommy Lee Jones) in New York.

In other categories, Tim Burton and Disney’s Frankenweenie has emerged as the front runner for Best Animated Film, taking home that award in Boston and LA. But the Best Documentary race is wide open with How to Survive a Plague, The Central Park Five, and The Gatekeepers winning an award each – although Plague also won Best Documentary at the Gotham Independent Film Awards last month.

And let’s raise a glass to Admit One favourite, Beasts of the Southern Wild, which quietly amassed four awards, including Best Debut Director for Benh Zeitlin in New York. Great to see it doing well – perhaps it’s the dark horse in the Oscar race….

Who do you think will take home the iconic gold statuettes come February?
