The 70th Annual Golden Globe Awards wrapped up late this afternoon, with favourites Lincoln, Life of Pi and Zero Dark Thirty having to take a back seat to Argo. The Ben Affleck-directed hostage drama walked away with the show’s two biggest awards: Best Picture (Drama) and Best Director. Tom Hooper’s Les Misérables was the other big winner, snaring Best Picture (Musical or Comedy), Best Actor (Musical or Comedy) for Hugh Jackman, and the Best Supporting Actress award for Anne Hathaway.
Lincoln and Zero Dark Thirty had to settle for sharing the two big acting awards in the drama category. Best Actor (Drama) went to Daniel Day Lewis and Best Actress: Drama to Jessica Chastain. Life of Pi only came away with Best Original Score… but that could all change come Oscar time.
The ceremony itself was a right mixed bag. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were outstanding hosts and delivered some hilarious monologues. One quip from Poehler had me, and the crowd, roaring with laughter: “I haven’t been following the controversy surrounding Zero Dark Thirty. But when it comes to torture, I trust the woman who spent three years married to James Cameron” – so funny it even drew a chuckle out of director Kathryn Bigelow.
Some of the night’s other presenters didn’t fare so well, stuttered lines and blatantly reading from a prompted script. It wasn’t always their own fault – a teleprompter malfunction left poor Paul Rudd and Salma Hayek floundering – but it did show many of the stars hadn’t prepared. Will Ferrell and Kristen Wig had though. Their intro to the Best Actress (Musical or Comedy) award drew raucous laughter from their peers.
The acceptance speeches were pretty good on the whole – when people were given enough time to talk! Adele (Best Original Song), Jennifer Lawrence (Best Actress: Musical or Comedy) and Hugh Jackman (Best Actor: Musical or Comedy) gave humble thanks and showed (again) just how down-to-earth they are. But the speech of the night belonged to Jody Foster, after receiving the Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement award. Part thanks, stand-up, rant, and ramble… it was something else. And she ‘came out’ in the process… while refusing to say she was coming out – well played, Jody.
Big congrats to all the winners – especially Ben Affleck after his Oscar snub for Best Director.
