One of my ‘must see at any cost’ movies this year is Sin City: A Dame To Kill For, Robert Rodriquez and Frank Miller‘s follow-up to the 2005 smash Sin City. Production’s already underway and a New Zealand release date is set for 3 October.
Little else is known about the film but over the past few days casting details have emerged – and the list of names is mighty impressive. Many of the original cast are back, along with some exciting new additions.
Returning are Mickey Rourke as tough-guy Marv, Jessica Alba as the gorgeous Nancy, Jamie King as seductress Wendy (a.k.a. Goldie), Michael Madson as turn-coat Bob, Rosario Dawson as tough b*tch Gail, and Bruce Willis as bad-ass disgraced cop Hartigan – a fan favourite. Willis was announced yesterday – but how they will resurrect Hardigan after seemingly met his end in the first film?
The new additions to the Sin City family are Joseph Gordon-Levitt (The Dark Knight Rises), Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men), Juno Temple (Killer Joe), Jeremy Piven (TV’s Entourage), Christopher Meloni (TV’s Special Victims Unit), Dennis Haysbert (TV’s The Unit), Jamie Chung (Sucker Punch), and Ray Liotta (Goodfellas). Brilliant!
Brolin will replace Clive Owen as Dwight, Haysbert replaces the late Michael Clarke Duncan as Manute, and Jamie Chung takes over from Devon Aoki as Miho.
As for the others… we don’t know much. But Rodriquez says of Gordon-Levitt’s role “…he’s a gambler, a very cocky gambler, who comes in and tries to beat the biggest villain in Sin City at his own game”.
I can hardly wait to see the first footage. Can you? Might have to re-watch Sin City this weekend to get my fix.
Just Another Saturday Night: On the night John Hartigan met back up with Nancy in That Yellow Bastard, Marv regains consciousness on a highway overlooking the Projects, surrounded by dead young guys, unable to remember how he got there.
Untitled Original Story: Set after Hartigan’s suicide at the end of That Yellow Bastard, Nancy tries to survive the remainder of the night with Roark Junior/Yellow Bastard’s men on her trail.
The Long Bad Night: Johnny, a cocky gambler, disguises a darker mission to destroy the biggest villain in Sin City at his own game. He beats the wrong guy.
Directed by Robert Rodriquez and Frank Miller, the film stars Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba, Jamie King, Michael Madson, Rosario Dawson, Bruce Willis, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Josh Brolin, Juno Temple, Jeremy Piven, Christopher Meloni, Dennis Haysbert, Jamie Chung, and Ray Liotta.
Sin City: A Dame to Kill For hits New Zealand screens on 3 October.
