Godzilla is already one of the most anticipated films of 2014 – despite no synopsis, images or actual footage being available. However casting for the Gareth Edwards (Monsters) directed reboot is well underway and the list of names is mighty impressive.

The brilliant David Strathairn (Good Night and Good Luck, Lincoln) has just signed on to (apparently) play a military leader. Meanwhile Juliette Binoche (Chocolat), Bryan Cranston (Drive, TVs Breaking Bad), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kick-Ass) and the super-talented Elizabeth Olsen (Martha Marcy May Marlene) are “in talks” – but looking likely to sign on. Is that a great cast or what? Just need to sign a big lizard with an anger-management problem, and we’ll be away.

Gareth Edwards and Legendary Pictures are looking to give us the big screen monster thrill we’ve been waiting years for – while banishing all memory of the Roland Emmerich 1998 disaster.

Test footage unveiled at this year’s Comic Con – featuring apocalyptic city destruction scenes and a view brief obstructed view of the Godzilla, with the famous and haunting Oppenheimer speech as the voice-over – sent fanboys and girls into monster heaven. Inconceivably, none of that ever leaked. Shame.

Edwards is a great choice as director. But if you need convincing, check out his brilliant low-budget indie flick Monsters. If anyone can bring decent character development to a monster movie, it’s him.

Production gets underway very soon and Godzilla will stomp into New Zealand theatres on 15 May, 2014.

You excited about Japan’s most famous Kaiju (giant monster) hitting our screens again? Who else would you like to see cast?
