The Brad Pitt-lead zombie apocalypse film World War Z has a new trailer, and it’s a vast improvement on what’s come before it – better story arc and improved CGI.

The new promo really showcases the global scale of the aforementioned apocalypse and the many countries our hero, United Nations worker Gerry Lane, has to travel to find the cause of the scourge – and save what’s left of humanity.

Alongside Mr Pitt, the film features a solid cast, including: Mirelle Enos (Gangster Squad), David Morse (The Green Mile), James Badge Dale (Flight) and Matthew Fox (Emperor). Marc Forster (Finding Neverland, Quantum of Solace) directs.

Based on the novel of the same name from author Max Brooks, World War Z takes overwhelms NZ cinemas on 20 June.

I was little skeptical about this film before, but I’m more than a little interested now. I do love disaster flicks (even the cheesy ones) and as far as that goes this looks truly epic.

Personally I like my zombies staggering, groaning and drooling as only desperate, underfed and underpaid extras in goulish makeup with lashings of red corn syrup can. So these zombie hordes still look like something out of video game (obviously, I’m not the only one to point this out). Still the newly enhanced CGI helps things a great deal – less cartoon-like than before. And the giant zombie swarms make for some very cool-looking set pieces – especially the ones with helicopters firing on them.

Alas, the trailer gives far too much away; but I guess that’s not surprising given the competition in the blockbuster category this year.

As long as the film doesn’t become triple cheese fondue and plays out as a solid “us vs. them” actioner, it should be entertaining.

You ready for the end of the world?
