“You wanna fight?” It’s round two for actor Ryan Gosling and director Nicholas Winding Refn. Following their sensational 2011 hit Drive, film fans have been chomping at the bit to catch a glimpse of their new crime collaboration, Only God Forgives. Well, the first trailer has been released… and it’s one of the coolest, most stylish and intense pieces of red band promo ever!

Set in Bangkok, Gosling plays Julian, an exile and owner of a Thai boxing gym being used as a front for his family’s drug business. When a retired police lieutenant, affectionately known as ‘The Angel of Vengeance’, is linked to the murder of Julian’s brother (for killing a prostitute), he is forced by his crime boss mother (Kristen Scott Thomas) to seek revenge – plunging Julian deep into Thailand’s criminal underworld.

Only God Forgives doesn’t have a New Zealand release date yet, but it’s looking like mid-to-late 2013. In the meantime, enjoy this ‘must watch’ trailer:

Cool. Stylish. Intense. I could also throw in Slick, Sexy and Brutal. This looks so good!

There’s more than a hint of Drive here, at least in terms of style, but at the same time this is a completely different animal – a much darker and more brutal looking affair.

Scott Thomas’ merciless mother figure is quite terrifying and could well be a scene stealer. And Gosling brings his blank visage/cool charm A-game once again. But there’s a real rage lurking under his character’s surface that sends shivers down my spine.

Speaking of shivers, how awesome was that final scene in the trailer? You know that’s gonna be one hell of a fight.

At this point, the only way to momentarily quell my excitement for this film would be to punch me in the face.

But please don’t.

Are you ready to take another ride with Refn and Ryan?

Julian (Gosling) lives in exile in Bangkok where he runs a Thai boxing club as a front for the family’s drugs smuggling operation. When Julian’s brother Billy is killed their mother, Jenna (Kristen Scott Thomas), arrives in the city. She wants revenge and forces Julian to find the killer. Julian’s contacts in the criminal underworld lead him directly to The Angel of Vengeance, a retired police officer who knows everything and who is both Judge and Punisher. Jenna demands that Julian kill The Angel of Vengeance, an act that will cost him dearly.

Directed by Nicolas Winding Refn, the film stars Ryan Gosling, Kristen Scott Thomas, Tom Burke, Yayaying, Sahajak Boonthanakit, and Vithaya Pansringarm.

No release date has been set.
