Guillermo del Toro‘s manga-inspired robots vs. monsters epic Pacific Rim opens tomorrow – and to celebrate, they’ve released a 14-minute “Making of” featurette.

More of an overview than a detailed insight, it’s a mash up of previous featurette footage along with a quick introduction to some of the main characters – and to the dire situation humanity finds itself in 20 years after the Kaiju rise up from the ocean floor.

Leads Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Ron Perlman, Burn Gorman, and Charlie Day all appear, along with director del Toro.

It’s a fun look at what is sure to be an insane silver screen spectacle – or as Ron Pearlman describes it: “… a rock’em sock ’em big visual banquet”.

Be warned, the featurette shows a lot of battle footage (albeit quick cut) so if you’d rather save yourself for tomorrow, then best not watch this ’til later.

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot and an untested trainee —who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Directed by Guillermo del Toro the film stars Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Ron Perlman, Burn Gorman, and Charlie Day.

Pacific Rim open 11 July, 2013.
