First there was film festival buzz and now there’s Oscar hype surrounding Alfonso Cuaron‘s Gravity. So what better time to release the first full-length trailer for the sci-fi epic which sees two astronauts stranded above Earth after their space shuttle is destroyed – fortunately not the work of an alien invasion force for once.

The two imperilled spacefarers, played by Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, find themselves tethered together and must face the terrifying prospect of floating further out into space in order to survive.

Complete with stunning space vistas, the new trailer shows that there’s a lot more action involved in this film than just two Oscar-bound actors floating in space. But the real drama will lie with our astro-pals alone in the dark – their oxygen running low. From all accounts we will feel every second of their fear and anxiety, as if the air is being sucked out of our very lungs in the the cinema.

Cuaron, who also helmed the stunning and powerful Children of Men, directs the script he co-wrote with his son, Jonas. Gravity opens here on 3 October – a whole day before the US (Yes!)

It’s a gripping trailer. I just hope it hasn’t given too much away. Best only watch it once.

The cinematography is breath-taking and there’s no doubt we’ll be holding our breath throughout those spectacular action sequences.

This is most definitely a film you’ll want to see on the biggest screen in town – sitting as close to the front as you dare. See you in the front row!

You ready for this ride?

Dr. Stone (Bullock) is a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (Clooney). But on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalsky completely alone—tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the blackness.

The deafening silence tells them they’ve lost any link to Earth… and any chance for rescue. As fear turns to panic, every gulp of air eats away at what little oxygen is left.

But the only way home may be to go further out into the terrifying expanse of space.

Directed by Alfonso Cuaron, the film stars Sandra Bullock, George Clooney, Eric Michels, Basher Savage, and Paul Sharma.

Gravity opens 3 October, 2013.
