“I was wrong. I was so wrong.” Before you even see a frame of footage in the teaser trailer for Ridley Scott‘s Prometheus, you’re already on the edge of your seat. From the crackling transmission over the opening credits, you know there’s bad times ahead for Charlize (Theron) and friends. From there you just sit back and marvel, as Ridley transports us back to the Alien universe; a dark corner of that universe, none of us have ever experienced.

There’s been a fair bit of secrecy over the plot of Prometheus – is it or is it not an Alien prequel? At Comic Con in July, Scott said that there was something in the first Alien that no one had ever asked about, and subsequent films had not explored, so that would be the centre piece of the film – but the only ‘DNA’ from Alien.

From the trailer it’s clear that he’s referring to the ‘Space Jockey’ – the giant chair-bound creature seen early on in Alien. One can assume that the Space Jockey and the Alien xenomorphs may somehow be more closely connected than we first thought. But how close, and how much the film will explore this remains unclear. But do we really care? All we needed to know is that this film will be awesome. And so it appears to be…

Enjoy!

There are very distinct nods to Alien in the trailer: the title graphics and the haunting siren like noise on the soundtrack. It feels familiar, and so do the chills that run down your spine as the sense of impending terror flows through you.

I look forward to meeting the cast of characters who will undertake this ill-fated journey, and learn a little more about the journey itself (but not too much).

Words cannot express how excited I am to see this film. I feel like I’m 12 years old. Bring on the full trailer!

So what did you think of the trailer? Are you excited to be back in the Alien universe? So do you reckon this is an Alien prequel?

A team of explorers find a clue to the origins of man on Earth, leading them on a journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.

Directed by Ridley Scott, the film’s sensational cast includes: Noomi Repace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Guy Pearce, Patrick Wilson, Logan Marshall-Green, Rafe Spall, Kate Dickie and Sean Harris.

Prometheus hits New Zealand on 7 June, 2012.
