Hey it’s another one of those romantic comedies you don’t have to be embarrassed to go to!  In Friends with Kids two pals decide to have a baby together, without being together, or in love.  It may not sound like the greatest set-up, but you shall (I hope) be pleasantly surprised. It feels original as far as Hollywood funny goes, and seems like something that girls AND boys can enjoy. Admit two!

The latest rom-com on the block stars Adam Scott (Parks & Recreation, Knocked Up) and is written and produced by, and stars, the overachieving Jennifer Westfeldt (Kissing Jessica Stein). Acting alongside her are a couple of the ladies from Bridesmaids, the dude who plays Don Draper, the IT Crowd guy, and Edward Burns’ voice (and Edward Burns).

Making a film which appeals to both sexes means good things at the box office, and Friends with Kids looks to be one of these; steering away from the cheesier side of romance, to  join successes like Knocked Up in the casual/cute romance category.  Have a look:

See? Doesn’t that look some wholesome fun? It’s one of those trailers where at the end you feel like you’ve sort of seen the whole film, but you still want to watch it right? Right?

Judging by the amount of air time they get here, it looks like Maya Rudolf (Bridesmaids, Up All Night), Kristen Wiig (Adventureland, Whip It!) and Jon Hamm (Bridesmaids, Mad Men) will be supporting the heck out of Friends with Kids, as the married pals in the group. I’m not sold on Megan Fox as a love interest. While she’s a gorgeous lass, I find her about as romantic as Keanu Reeves (Sweet November anyone?).

A group of friends… three guys, three gals. Just like that  show Friends… but with kids.

Would you go see this with your boyfriend/girlfriend? Why is Jon Hamm so perturbed by quiche?  Can I coin the term ‘date night genre’?

Two best friends decide to have a child together while keeping their relationship platonic, so they can avoid the toll kids can take on romantic relationships.

Friends with Kids is directed, written and produced by Jennifer Westfeldt who also stars opposite Adam Scott, Kristen Wiig, Jon Hamm, Maya Rudolph and Chris O’Dowd (all from Bridesmaids), Edward Burns (Saving Private Ryan) and Megan Fox (Jennifer’s Body).

American theatres will be seeing Friends with Kids in March, with no word yet on when it will be in NZ. Stay tuned.
