‘Beyond science. Beyond sanity. Beyond control.’ Here at Admit One we like to bring you things that are a bit different – and this retro-futuristic visual acid of a trailer for Beyond the Black Rainbow most definitely qualifies. Quite the oddity, it had me wondering if someone had slipped a little something into my coffee this morning.

Set in 1983, ‘a disturbed and beautiful girl is held captive by a doctor in search of inner peace. Her mind controlled by a sinister technology.’ This coupled with Kubrick-like visuals certainly feels like a winning combination to me.

But the best description of what you’re about to see comes from the director, Panos Cosmatos, himself. Prior to the film’s screening at the 2011 AFI film festival he said to the audience: “I hope you’re as messed up in the head as I was when I made this film.”

Enjoy!

Don’t you just love it when a film gets madman hair just right? Our creepy captor, Dr. Nyle, oozes cult villain and I can’t wait to see him, and his locks, on the big screen. The trailer is well put together – amping up the weird factor without going completely over the top. I don’t know about you, but for me Beyond the Black Rainbow looks like a film to watch out for.

Are you interested in taking this trip? Which movie character do you think should be honoured with ‘maddest hair’?

Deep within the mysterious Arboria Institute, a disturbed and beautiful girl is held captive by a doctor in search of inner peace. Her mind controlled by a sinister technology. Silently, she waits for her next session with deranged therapist Dr. Barry Nyle. If she hopes to escape, she must journey through the darkest reaches of The Institute… but Nyle wonʼt easily part with his most gifted and dangerous creation.

Written and directed by Panos Cosmatos, the film stars Eva Allan, Michael Rogets, Scott Hylands, and Marilyn Norry.

No release date has been set for Beyond the Black Rainbow. But it looks like something that could make the Incredibly Strange section of the NZ International Film Festival, if it doesn’t get a general release here.
