This is one of those trailers that make me hold my breath – it’s that good. The monologue, the song and the dreamy-summery scenes starring girl of the decade Michelle Williams, all add up to a killer preview for Sarah Polley’s sophomore film Take This Waltz.
When Margot (Williams) meets Daniel (Luke Kirby), their chemistry is intense and immediate. But Margot suppresses her sudden attraction: she is happily married to Lou (Seth Rogen), a celebrated cookbook writer. When Margot learns that Daniel lives across the street from them, the certainty about her domestic life shatters. Here’s Take This Waltz:
I love the weighting of this trailer, with the first half given to a kind of wistfulness, with the monologue by Williams’ character and the second half all upbeat with quirky dancing, quick cuts and Jenn Grant’s ‘Parachutes’ playing along.
Polley’s writing/directorial debut Away from Her is in my all time top-10 list; a pitch perfect character study of love in older age; funny and melancholy. Thematically, Take This Waltz seems not dissimilar, focusing again on the effects that time and other people have on a marriage.
Three teaser trailers have also been released for Take this Waltz. Going by these, by how much I like Williams and Sarah Silverman, and the awesomeness that was Polley’s first film, I have no doubt that this will be a kind of idiotic, ridiculous, marvellous genius.
Thoughts on rickshaws? On Michelle Williams? On Seth Rogen playing the straight man?
Take This Waltz is still on festival release, sadly, but keep checking back for a New Zealand release date.
