Entertainment Weekly (EW) has published the first photos from Kimberly Peirce‘s Carrie adaptation. A bloodsoaked Chloe Grace Moretz (Kick-Ass, Hugo) in her prom dress and Julianne Moore (Children of Men, Magnolia) in her nightdress draw striking similarities to the 1976 film – although apparently this adaptation is closer to the Stephen King book than the Brian De Palma classic.

When the remake/new adaptation was first announced, I groaned rather loudly. I’m a fan of the original film and didn’t see the need to remake it. But when I heard the Moretz was on board, I calmed down a bit. Moretz is a fabulous talent and, despite being only 15 years old, seems quite unaffected by the Hollywood machine. She chooses good, often edgy, roles rather than ones that will simply enhance her career  – or at least that’s how it appears to me. Chloe was great in Let Me In (the excellent remake of Let The Right One In), so I guess you could say that I trust her judgement.

Sissy Spacek drenched in blood is an iconic cinematic image, and Moretz has pulled off the look brilliantly. Julianne Moore also looks the part as Carrie White’s religious fanatic mum and spoke about the role to EW: “This woman has clearly had a psychotic break, perhaps several,” says Moore. “But what’s sad about it for me is that she’s clearly sick and here’s this poor child in the thrall of this person who is seriously ill. And on top of that, they have this mother-daughter relationship. So we want to make that relationship as meaningful as possible, even though it is horrible and destructive.”

Here are the EW images – complete with comparison images to the 1976 film:

Keen to see this remake? Moretz and Moore good choices for their roles?

Carrie White is an outcast amongst her high school peers due to her mother’s extreme religious beliefs. Upon discovering hidden telekinetic abilities, she uses her newly-developed powers to take revenge against her tormenters at the senior prom.

Directed by Kimberly Peirce, the films stars Chloe Grace Moretz, Julianne Moore, Judy Greer, Gabriella Wilde, Alex Russell, Max Topplin, Portia Doubleday, Conner Price, Skyler Wexler and Ansel Elgort.

No New Zealand release date has been announced. Australia gets the film on March 14 next year, so I’d imagine we’ll get it on the same date.
