The first images came out this week for Shame, the new movie from British filmmaker Steve McQueenMichael Fassbender plays Brandon, a man living in New York who is unable to manage his ‘myriad sexual escapades’. After his self-destructive younger sister (Carey Mulligan) moves into his apartment, his entire world starts to spiral out of control.

While I’m not really sure what that synopsis means; undoubtedly it’ll be something pretty good. McQueen made his debut in 2008 with Hunger (also starring Fassbender), winning himself the Caméra d’Or at Cannes for first-time filmmakers.

I saw Hunger at the 2008 New Zealand International Film Festival and thought it was amazing but, understandably, depressing; concerned with the last six weeks of the life of Irish republican hunger striker Bobby Sands. Plus I felt weird about all the snacks I’d bought from the Candy Bar.

I really like the look of these stills (courtesy of  TIFF 2011) reminiscent of Hunger in their cleanness but a lot warmer.  And with the addition of Carey Mulligan (Never Let Me Go, The Greatest) to the Fassbender-McQueen team, I can only imagine good things.

How do you feel about Hunger? Do these images make you want to see Shame?

Shame is directed by Steve McQueen, written by Abi Morgan (Brick Lane) and Steve McQueen, and stars Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First Class), Carey Mulligan and James Badge Dale (The Departed).

Shame premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.
