The first images came out this week for Shame, the new movie from British filmmaker Steve McQueen. Michael Fassbender plays Brandon, a man living in New York who is unable to manage his ‘myriad sexual escapades’. After his self-destructive younger sister (Carey Mulligan) moves into his apartment, his entire world starts to spiral out of control.
While I’m not really sure what that synopsis means; undoubtedly it’ll be something pretty good. McQueen made his debut in 2008 with Hunger (also starring Fassbender), winning himself the Caméra d’Or at Cannes for first-time filmmakers.
I saw Hunger at the 2008 New Zealand International Film Festival and thought it was amazing but, understandably, depressing; concerned with the last six weeks of the life of Irish republican hunger striker Bobby Sands. Plus I felt weird about all the snacks I’d bought from the Candy Bar.
I really like the look of these stills (courtesy of TIFF 2011) reminiscent of Hunger in their cleanness but a lot warmer. And with the addition of Carey Mulligan (Never Let Me Go, The Greatest) to the Fassbender-McQueen team, I can only imagine good things.
How do you feel about Hunger? Do these images make you want to see Shame?
Shame premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.
