It seems like fairy tales are getting adapted a lot lately, and Snow White is definitely the ‘It [fairy princess] Girl’ of the year. Snow is currently starring in a film called Mirror Mirror, a TV show called Once Upon A Time, and now you can see her in the second official trailer for Snow White and the Huntsman. This version is her at most badass, as a tiny warrior played by Kristen Stewart.
In Snow White and the Huntsman, the huntsman who’s ordered to take Snow into the woods to be killed ends up becoming her protector and mentor in a quest to vanquish the evil queen. I don’t think it’s a terribly intriguing plot, but it’s a star studded one: along with Stewart (The Twilight Saga), there’s Chris Hemsworth (Thor) as the Huntsman, Charlize Theron (Young Adult) as the Queen, and Ian McShane (Deadwood) as a dwarf.
I like the darkness of it and the creature features. My main problem is the Queen’s beauty regime scenes (mirror mirror, blablabla) and that she seems like a pretty unsympathetic villain, making the way she dominates the first trailer a bit worrisome. I’m not sold on the CGI –smashing bodies, the goldy mirror dude, and the all-powerful smoke/metal combo that’s not unlike Smoky the Smoke Monster from Lost.
But there are seven dwarves! McShane, Johnny Harris, Bob Hoskins, Toby Jones, Eddie Marsan, Brian Gleeson , Ray Winstone and Nick Frost play Snow White’s legendary group of buddies, and I feel like with this cast we really can’t go too wrong. My hopes are for a magical and grim, action-packed, creature-filled film that doesn’t saturate the market with too many trailers and 5 minute extended previews of queenly ablutions.
Any interest in seeing this incarnation of Snow White? As the Queen, would you not look at the handsome Huntsman and think: maybe he’s not the best guy to be sending after the prettiest girl in the land…hmm..?
Directed by Rupert Sanders and written by Evan Dougherty, John Lee Hancock (The Blind Side) and Hossein Amini (Drive).
Snow White and the Huntsman arrives in New Zealand on June 21.
