Judgment is coming! With all the comic book adaptations this year it’s easy to forget that there’s a Judge Dredd film arriving in October, entitled Dredd. A teaser poster has just been released for the R-rated sci-fi – a very cool image of the Judge partially cloaked in darkness.

Along with the poster comes a couple of sharp looking concept images – a cityscape of Mega City One and Dredd enforcing his right to be judge, jury and executioner.

New Zealand’s Karl Urban stars as Judge Dredd, alongside Olivia Thirlby (The Darkest Hour) and Lena Headey (TV’s Game of Thrones). I’m looking forward to seeing Urban kick some butt in this movie and really hope Dredd turns out to be the film fans of the comic book deserve (unlike the 1995 Sylvester Stallone bomb). However, rumours of creative differences between the director and producers/studio executives have given many cause for concern. Let’s hope that concern is unfounded.

Note: This is the American version of the poster. They get the film in late September.

You excited for Dredd? Anyone like the Stallone version?

The future America is an irradiated waste land. On its East Coast, running from Boston to Washington DC, lies Mega City One – a vast, violent metropolis where criminals rule the chaotic streets. The only force of order lies with the urban cops called “Judges” who possess the combined powers of judge, jury and instant executioner. Known and feared throughout the city, Dredd (Urban) is the ultimate Judge, challenged with ridding the city of its latest scourge – a dangerous drug epidemic that has users of “Slo-Mo” experiencing reality at a fraction of its normal speed.

During a routine day on the job, Dredd is assigned to train and evaluate Cassandra Anderson (Thirlby), a rookie with powerful psychic abilities thanks to a genetic mutation. A heinous crime calls them to a neighborhood where fellow Judges rarely dare to venture – a 200 story vertical slum controlled by prostitute-turned-drug lord Ma-Ma (Headey) and her ruthless clan. When they capture one of the clan’s inner circle, Ma-Ma overtakes the compound’s control center and wages a dirty, vicious war against the Judges that proves she will stop at nothing to protect her empire. With the body count climbing and no way out, Dredd and Anderson must confront the odds and engage in the relentless battle for their survival.

Pete Travis directs from a script by Alex Garland. Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby, Domhnall Gleeson, Santi Scinelli, Deobia Oparei, Langley Kirkwood, Rakie Ayola and Lena Headey star.

Dredd passes judgement on October 4, 2012.
