This week: two films about the “American Dream”. The dream is very much alive in one – but in the other, it’s about to come crashing down.

BEKAS……FILM OF THE WEEK
Sweden, Finland, Iraq | 97 minutes | Drama
Director: Karzan Kader (The Last Four)
Cast: Zamand Taha, Sarwar Fazil
Set in the early 1990s, ‘Bekas’ is a heart-warming story of two homeless Iraqi brothers attempting the impossible dream, to go to America and live with Superman – who will be able to solve all of their problems, protect them and punish everyone who has been mean to them. At the top of this list, is Saddam Hussein.
This looks a touching, and hilarious, drama. The two leads light up the screen, much like their hero.

THE GREAT GATSBY
USA, Australia | 142 minutes | Drama, Romance
Director: Baz Luhrmann (Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge!)
Cast: Leonardo DiCaprio, Isla Fisher, Joel Edgerton, Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire, Adelaide Clemens, Callan McAuliffe, Amitabh Bachchan, Gemma Ward, Elizabeth Debicki
Would-be writer Nick Carraway (Maguire) chases his own American Dream by leaving the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz, bootleg kings, and sky-rocketing stocks. But Nick lands next door to the mysterious, party-giving millionaire Jay Gatsby (DiCaprio) who draws him into his captivating world of the super-rich and their illusions, loves and deceits.
Hopefully there’s some substance to go with all that trademark Luhrmann style.
