On 11 July we’ll be treated to a monster movie of epic proportions. The final trailer for Guillermo del Toro‘s Pacific Rim perfectly underlines just how big this monsters vs. robots, manga-inspired blockbuster is going to be – even if it (again) gives away too much of the action.
When legions of monstrous creatures called Kaiju rise from a dimensional rip in the ocean floor and wreak havoc on Earth, mankind creates giant robots (Jaegers) to help them take back the planet. But after years of war, with defeat at hand, our last hope rests with a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam), a rookie trainee (Rinko Kikuchi) and a legendary but obsolete Jaeger.
Fingers crossed this lives up to its billing.
From an action standpoint, this film’s going to be amazing. Every set piece gives me chills. The trailer definitely gives away too many “woah!” moments, although I’m sure there’s still a lot we haven’t seen. And heck, how can you promote a flick like this without showing insane battles, monster destruction and rock ’em-sock e’m robots?
What has been missing from all the promo to date is story, dialogue and character development – so far it’s all cheesy voiceover and obligatory, heroic, battle speech. Hopefully this has been done to give us plenty to look forward to when the film opens, but I’d be lying if I didn’t say I was a little worried not to see any in the final trailer.
The little we did see in the last trailer was a tad cringe-worthy, so I hope that’s not reflection of the final product. Still, we can hardly go into a monster movie expecting Shakespearean prose recited by honoured thespians, now can we?
I want Pacific Rim to be thoroughly entertaining – in a way many blockbusters of this type aren’t – and I believe it will be.

Directed by Guillermo del Toro the film stars Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Ron Perlman, Burn Gorman, and Charlie Day.
Pacific Rim open 11 July, 2013.
