Where has the year gone? I can’t complain thought, because it means that Cannes is just a few day away!
Each year I rave on about how awesome Cannes is and how I can’t wait to dive in. This year is no different. And this year, there’s extra motivation. The success of the first year of the Terror-Fi Film Festival has me on the hunt for hidden genre gems to bring home to New Zealand audiences.
For me Cannes is still where it’s at. Not only is it the grand-daddy of festivals, it has the worlds largest film market attached. And most of the people that I know in the film industry, outside of New Zealand of course, come to Cannes each year. I can’t wait to catch up with all my friends.
It’s extra special because my Cannes mates come from all sides of the industry: writers, directors, producers, cinematographers, financiers, sales agents … and press. You get so many different perspectives on the films being shown, and the industry in general. Where else can you get something like that!?! Nowhere.
But enough rambling on. I’m here to tell you about the films I’m most excited to see. And there are a few…
Blackkkansman:
This looks like one of the best Spike Lee Joint’s in years.
Everybody Knows:
Master filmmaker Asghar Farhadi returns with Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem in toe.
Under Silver Lake:
The follow up film from IT FOLLOWS director David Robert Mitchell.
Cold War
If you’ve seen Pawel Pawlikowski’s film IDA, you’ll know why I’m excited to see this.
Solo: A Star Wars Story
Like everyone else I’m a little worried how this will turn out, but hell … it’s the World Premiere of a Star Wars film!
House that Jack Built
I’m always excited when a new Lars Von Trier film comes out. Like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get.
Arctic
Anything with Mads Mikkelsen in it … I’m in!
Fahrenheit 451
Like above, anything with Michael Shannon in it …
The Man Who Killers Don Quixote
Finally!!!!!
