In February we were shown a teaser for the resurrection of the Bourne series. Now the full trailer for The Bourne Legacy has arrived. Not only is it action packed but it’s also a little intriguing. It appears that part of original Bourne series is still taking place while this film’s plot unfolds.

Jeremy Renner plays CIA operative and Treadstone participant Aaron Cross. When Jason Bourne arrives in Manhattan (in The Bourne Ultimatum) life gets a little complicated for the rest of Treadstone too, and Cross finds himself fighting for his life.

Reprising their roles from the original series are Albert Finney, Joan Allen, David Strathairn and Scott Glenn. Newbies Rachel Weisz (The Brothers Bloom) and Edward Norton (Fight Club) look to up the ante.

There was never just one:

Regardless of the debate as to whether this film should have been made, it looks like a really solid action flick. I do like that, instead being your standard continuation piece, this film is trying weave some of the original story into its timeline – despite Matt Damon not being involved. I hope that works and isn’t just a gimmick to get punters through the door.

The narrative architect behind the Bourne film series, Tony Gilroy, takes the helm in the next chapter of the hugely popular espionage franchise that has earned almost $1 billion at the global box office: The Bourne Legacy. The writer/director expands the Bourne universe created by Robert Ludlum with an original story that introduces us to a new hero (Jeremy Renner) whose life-or-death stakes have been triggered by the events of the first three films.

Renner joins fellow series newcomers Rachel Weisz (The Brothers Bloom), Edward Norton (Fight Club), Stacy Keach (American History X) and Oscar Isaac (Drive), while franchise veterans Albert Finney, Joan Allen, David Strathairn and Scott Glenn reprise their roles.

The Bourne Legacy hits New Zealand cinemas on August 16.
