The return of Robert Sarkies, the third time at bat for the Madagascar crew and a new film from the directors of Little Miss Sunshine headline the movies opening this week. But which return to the big screen will take home box office gold?

If none of those take your fancy, we have a couple of sultry offerings from Asia to tempt you.

.

Here are the film that opened today:

.

TWO LITTLE BOYS…….FILM OF THE WEEK

New Zealand | 101 minutes | Director: Robert Sarkies (Scarfies, Out of the Blue)

Sarkies brings two comedic TV stars along for the ride in his new black comedy. Bret McKenzie (Flight of the Conchords) and Hamish Blake (Hamish & Andy) star as best mates who attempt to cover up the accidental death of a ‘Scandinavian soccer football star’ at the hands of McKenzie’s character Nige.

I wonder if the soundtrack includes the classic Rolf Harris tune – you know, the one that gets stuck in your head every time you read the film’s title.

.

RUBY SPARKS

USA | 104 minutes | Directors: Jonathan Dayton & Valarie Faris (Little Miss Sunshine)

An author in a creative and romantic slump conceives a beautiful character as a figment for his desires. A week later she appears in the flesh in his kitchen… and completely in love with him. If only it was that easy!

.

MADAGASCAR 3: EUROPE’S MOST WANTED (3D & 2D)

USA | 93 minutes | Director: Eric Darnell (Madagascar)

Like 3-day-old bread shoved in the microwave, here’s a ‘new’ adventure for our animated zoo escapees – with Europe as the backdrop this time. Ok, that was a little mean. The trailer is quite fun, as I’m sure is the film. Ben Stiller, David Schwimmer, Chris Rock, Jada Pinkett Smith and Sacha Baron Cohen all return; with Frances McDormand, Bryan Cranston, Jessica Chastain and Martin Short joining in on the fun. Now that’s some serious star-powered voice talent.

.

KAMA SUTRA

UK, India, USA, USA | 110 minutes | Director: Mira Nair (Monsoon Wedding)

Released in 1996, this seductive story of a king, a princesses, a courtesan and a book of love makes a return to the cinema – in Auckland at least. I seem to recall it being quite controversial upon its original release; much less so these days I expect.

DUE WEST: OUR SEX JOURNEY 3D

China | 119 minutes | Director: Mark Wu

From a classy kind of seduction to, well, this… a comedy (yeah right) about a young man named Frankie who travels to China in search of love and lust – looks like more of the later… and in 3D no less. Adapted from a very successful internet novel, apparently.

And opening tomorrow:

.

HEROINE

India | 150 minutes | Director: Madhur Bhandarker (Fashion, Page 3)

‘A female superstar struggles through the trials and tribulations of being a Bollywood actress.’ Something we can all relate to then.

(No subtitles, but plenty of dancing!)

Any of these wet your whistle?
