I know this trailer is a month or so old, but I just love it and wanted to put it on the site. It’s the perfect first trailer. It offers you up some incredible imagery and leaves you wanting more, but doesn’t give much away. Hollywood take note!

The Tree of Life is the long awaited return to silver screen of acclaimed writer/director Terrence Malick (The Thin Red Line, The New World). The film stars Brad Pitt, Jessica Chastain and, one of my all time favourite actors, Sean Penn. For months the title was about the only thing anyone knew about the film. Terrence had things locked down tighter than a communist government. Eventually we found out that the story centres around a family with three boys in the 1950s, where the eldest boy witnesses the loss of innocence.

Brad Pitt then spoke to Empire magazine and said of the film, “Well, in a way. It’s this little tiny story of a kid growing up in the 50s with a mother who’s grace incarnate and a father who’s oppressive in nature. So he is negotiating his way through it, defining who he’s gonna be when he grows up. And that is juxtaposed with a little, tiny micro-story of the cosmos, from the beginning of the cosmos to the death of the cosmos. So that’s where the sci-fi – or the sci-fact – comes in.”

And that about sums up the trailer – not really giving us much, other that something that sounds intriguing. I love that I have no real clue. But that’s just me.

What you think of the trailer below? Do you love it and want to know more? Or do you think the film looks like it’s going to be artsy fartsy nonsense?

The Tree of Life is due to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, which begins May 4. The film will be released in the States on May 27 and will hit our shores August 25 –shame! But I for one will be there on opening night.

An early French review of the film has drawn comparisons to 2001, which makes me want to see it even more. I will keep you posted as news comes in.
