Tim Burton‘s back doing what Tim Burton does best – stop-motion animated features. This time out he’s taking a black and white short film he made in 1984 and giving it the big screen treatment. And so here we have the first poster and images for Frankenweenie.

Sticking to the charming but macabre story lines we all know and love, Burton’s Frankenweenie tells the following tale: ‘After unexpectedly losing his beloved dog Sparky, young Victor harnesses the power of science to bring his best friend back to life—with just a few minor adjustments. He tries to hide his home-sewn creation, but when Sparky gets out, Victor’s fellow students, teachers and the entire town all learn that getting a new leash on life can be monstrous.’

Frankenweenie will feature the voice talent of Winona Ryder, Martin Short, Catherine O’Hara, Martin Landau, Charlie Tahan, Atticus Shaffer, Robert Capron, and Conchata Ferrell; and is unleashed upon New Zealand on October 4 this year.

The Nightmare Before Christmas is one of my favourite films, and these images look very true to those roots. I’m looking forward to seeing Sparky on the big screen, and in 3D – especially given that 3D works well with animation.

Are you excited for Tim Burton’s return to stop-motion?
