The curtain has come down on the 65th Cannes Film Festival, so we thought we’d take a look at the big winners – and bring you their trailers.

The Palme d’Or was given to Michael Haneke‘s Amour (aka Love), the story of an elderly couple’s relationship after one of them has a stroke. This tear-jerker earns Haneke his second Palme d’Or, after he won in 2009 with The White Ribbon. He is one of only eight directors to ever achieve such a feat, and never has it been achieved in such a short space of time.

The runner up prize, Grand Prix of the Jury, was given to Gomorrah director Matteo Garrone‘s Reality, and Brit director Ken Loach received the Jury Prize for The Angel’s Share – so I guess that’s third place then. Carlos Reyadas won Best Director for his highly experimental film Post Tenebras Lux.

Beyond the Hills, the Romanian drama set in a rural convent, nabbed Best Screenplay along with joint Best Actress awards for its two leads. Sundance darling, and Admit One must see, Beasts of the Southern Wild took out the prize for First Time Filmmaker, and the brilliant Mads Mikklesen (Casino Royale, Valhalla Rising) won Best Actor for his turn as a kindergarten teacher accused of wrongdoing.

From all accounts Holy Motors, Rust and Bone and Killing Them Softly were unlucky to miss out, if reviews are to be believed. And early picks Moonrise Kingdom and On the Road didn’t feature either. But expect to see all of these in New Zealand at some stage, so we can judge for ourselves.

While Cannes rolls up its red carpets, evicts the celebrities and cleans its streets of fliers, tickets and passes, we wait patiently to see which gems will be coming our way in July/August as part of the New Zealand International Film Festival.

Which of these films would you recommend our film fest folks bring over for us to see? My top picks would be Amour, Beasts of the Southern Wild, and The Hunt.
