The full trailer for Resident Evil: Retribution has been released. This the fifth outing from husband and wife team Paul W. S. Anderson (director) and Milla Jovovich (actress) is looking to serve us up more of the same, albeit on a larger scale.
Our pouty heroine, Alice (Jovovich), awakens in yet another Umbrella operations facility – the most clandestine yet. She then sets out to do what she’s done in every other film: kill those responsible for the T-Virus outbreak – an outbreak which has now well and truly taken over the world.
Making the crossover from the Resident Evil games this time are Ada Wong (Bingbing Li) and Leon Scott Kennedy (Johann Urb). Returning for this outing are Jill Valentine (Sienna Guillory), Carlos Oliveira (Oded Fehr) and Rain Campos (Michelle Rodriguez) – with the latter somehow resurrected (after being killed off in the very first film).
You get the feeling with so many characters crammed in to one movie, this may well be the final in the series. But that’s what I thought last time. I’m sure they’ll try to squeeze another one out if this does well.
The official synopsis (below) hints at mind-blowing revelation for Alice in this film. If you don’t want to know what that is, then don’t watch the trailer. Talk about a rookie movie marketing mistake.
Much more of the same indeed. Fans of the series will lap up the extra helpings of hammy dialogue, fair-to-middling special effects, Jovovich in slow motion, and cheesy 3D. Unfortunately, I’m not one of them. I will admit that a couple of the large set pieces look quite cool, but that’s not enough for me to buy a ticket I’m afraid.
Still, at least Jovovich continues to cut the mustard as an action star. She has great screen presence and all the right moves. I just wish someone would give the girl some quality material to work with.
