The 20th anniversary Screen Production and Development Association (SPADA) Conference is wrapping up in Wellington. The two-day conference is New Zealand’s leading screen production industry event; with this year’s focus being “what leads to commercial and creative success in the fast changing world of independent filmmaking”.

Last night the SPADA Awards for 2012 were handed out to Mike Wallis, Peter Young and Vincent Burke.

Mike Wallis received New Filmmaker of the Year for his cracking ‘Pavlova Western’ Good For Nothing. This impressive self-funded, self-distributed feature film debut received critical and audience acclaim both here and overseas. For our review: click here.

Vincent Burke picked up the Industry Champion award for his years of dedicated service to New Zealand film and television. Vincent has served as President of SPADA and the NZ Film & Video Training Board, CEO of Top Shelf Productions and is a current a co-owner of the new “Choice” channel. Vincent’s producer credits include films such as Cinema of Unease and Predicament; and he the ongoing executive producer of TV’s Target series.

Independent Producer of the Year went to Peter Young for his stunning feature-length documentary The Last Ocean, on which he served as both producer and director. The Last Ocean raised ethical and environmental issues around protecting the world’s oceans, with a focus on the Ross Sea in Antarctica.
