007 vs. a school teacher. A one-sided contest?

Skyfall provides the big screen Bond thrills we’ve been dying for since dejectedly trudging home after Quantum of Solace; but the moving French-Canadian indie Monsieur Lazhar is an absolute gem and fully deserves to share centre stage this week.

.

Here are the films opening today:

.

SKYFALL……CO-FILM OF THE WEEK

UK | 145 minutes | Action, Thriller | Director: Sam Mendes (Revolutionary Road, American Beauty)

Skyfall banishes Quantum of Solace to the video nasties section and brings back the intrigue, intensity, thrills and spills – and even some classic camp. 007 hits his mark… but is this really the best Bond flick of all time? You decide.

.

MONSIEUR LAZHAR……CO-FILM OF THE WEEK

Canada | 94 minutes | Drama, Comedy | Director: Philippe Falardeau (Congorama)

Beautifully scripted and superbly acted, this tale of an Algerian immigrant teacher in Montreal will put a smile on your face and tear in your eye. It wowed us at this year’s NZIFF and we’re delighted it now has a general release.

.

COMPLIANCE

USA | 90 minutes | Thriller | Director: Craig Zobel (Great World of Sound)

An Ohio fast food manager receives a call from the police to say one of her employees has stolen money from a customer. The bizarre events that follow put this flick in the ‘truth is stranger than fiction’ file. You’re unlikely to forget this film…. whether you like it or not is a whole different story.

.

Will you be seeing one, two or all three of these?
