What a line-up we have for you this week, with a gripping Paul Thomas Anderson drama, a stylish mobster flick and the return of a Pixar classic topping the list.
.
Here are the films opening in cinemas today:
.
THE MASTER……FILM OF THE WEEK
USA | 138 minutes | Drama | Director: Paul Thomas Anderson (There Will Be Blood)
A World War II veteran who becomes a social outcast is taken in and groomed by a charismatic cult leader. Sounds gripping enough. But put Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman in the title roles, and Paul Thomas Anderson in the director’s chair, and you have an absolute ‘must see’ on your hands.
Distributor: TWC
.
GANGSTER SQUAD
USA | 112 minutes | Crime, Action, Drama | Director: Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland)
Based on a series of LA Times articles, this stylish old-school mobster flick tells the story of LAPD detectives forced to go beyond the law to bring down legendary mafia boss Micky Cohen. If this is half as good as The Untouchables I’m in. And what a cast: Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone and Sean Penn to name but four. I’d see this for Penn (as Cohen) alone.
Distributor: Roadshow Films
.
MONSTERS, INC. 3D
USA | 92 minutes | Animated, Family, Adventure | Director: Pete Doctor (Up), David Silverman (The Road to El Dorado), and Lee Unkrich (Toy Story 3)
There’s so much to love about this film. I can’t wait to see it on the big screen again – even if the 3D is converted. If it wasn’t for The Master, and it being a re-release, this would most definitely be our Film of the Week. Enjoy… again!
Distributor: Disney
.
PARANORMAN
USA | 93 minutes | Animated, Family, Adventure | Director: Chris Butler (Debut Feature)
Stop-motion animated film about a boy who can communicate with the dead – which is handy when a witch’s curse unleashes a legion of zombies. Sounds very Tim Burton. As it happens, writer/director Butler storyboarded Burton’s Corpse Bride.
Distributor: Paramount NZ
.
WHOLE LOTTA SOLE
UK | 90 minutes | Comedy, Drama | Director: Terry George (Hotel Rwanda)
A mad-cap comedy-drama about a new father in debt with the mob. But while trying to get out of trouble he only gets deeper into it. A superb supporting cast in this one, although Brendan Fraser looks a tad out of place don’t you think? Perhaps that’s the idea.
Distributor: Rialto Distribution

Which of these do you want to see? I bet there’s more than one.
