There are some, like me, who will remember having their minds blown a couple of years back by a bat-shit crazy film called Rubber that featured a killer tyre named Robert with telekinetic powers. Well, the nutty professor behind that cinematic insanity, Quentin Dupieux, is at it again. His new film, Wrong, looks equally insane. It’s been a year since we saw the teaser trailer, but finally a full length trailer has been released.

In Wrong, a guy called Ralph has lost the love of his life, his dog, Paul. But in his quest to find Paul, Ralph may well end up losing something else… his mind. Helping, or perhaps hindering, his search are a nympho pizza-delivery girl, a jogging neighbour seeking the absolute, an opportunistic French-Mexican gardener, an off-kilter pet detective, and a mysterious pony-tailed guru – the later played by the brilliant character actor William Fichtner (Drive Angry, The Dark Knight).

Essentially it’s a story about the profound love people have for their dogs, told as only Dupieux can.

Quentin serves as writer, director and DOP on the film. For those of you living in the UK in 1999, you may recall the Dupieux’s memorable Levi’s jeans TV commercial featuring a puppet called Flat Eric. When he’s not making movies, Quentin’s a recording artist – his most memorable track featuring on the aforementioned ads.

“Why?” Why indeed. Wrong will definitely be an acquired taste. But the trailer does a great job of showing just how nutty this film will be, for those of us who like that sort of thing.

The cast of characters is delightfully eclectic. Fichtner’s presence makes this a must see for me – his guru looks hilarious.

Wrong is released ‘on demand’ in the States on 1 February and hits US cinemas 29 March. Hopefully we’ll see it soon after.

Dolph Springer wakes up one morning to realize he has lost the love of life, his dog, Paul. During his quest to get Paul (and his life) back, Dolph radically changes the lives of others. In his journey to find Paul, Dolph may lose something even more vital – his mind.

Written and directed by Quentin Dupieux, the film stars Jack Plotnick, Eric Judor, Alexis Dziena, Steve Little and William Fichtner.

A New Zealand release date for Wrong has yet to be scheduled.
