The Kiwi thriller Eternity arrives in cinemas from next Thursday. This second feature from writer/director Alex Galvin (When Night Falls) combines sci-fi and mystery elements in stunning locations, to create a film that looks a cut above your average CGI-laiden Hollywood product.

Last year we brought you the teaser trailer and now we have the gripping full trailer to show you. It gives more depth to the story of disgraced detective Richard Manning (Elliot Travers), who finds his very existence on the line when he trades the real world for a virtual one as part of an exercise to redeem his reputation.

Joining Travers on screen is a host of Kiwi talent, including Amy Usherwood (Shortland Street), Dean Knowsley (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey), Geraldine Brophy (Second Hand Wedding), Liz Kirkman, Ralph Johnson and Jessica Manins. Asian actress and model Amy Tsang plays Manning’s wife.

Hong Kong acts as the real world and breathtaking locations in Wellington, Hawke’s Bay and Kapiti Coast double as the virtual. See if you can spot where each scene was filmed:

Galvin again shows how filmmakers that self-fund can make something that looks like millions have been spent on it. Kudos also goes to cinematographer Matt Sharp who has helped create the film’s stunning look – a character unto itself.

As for the story, it definitely keeps you guessing to the very end. How do I know this? Well, I was fortunate to see an earlier cut and I’m really looking forward to seeing the final theatrical edit.

I should note that I also make my big screen debut in the film – a very minor ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ cameo. But if next year they hand out an Oscar for ‘Best Male Cop Lifting Security Tape’, I’m a shoe-in!

Eternity has garnered plenty of international acclaim this year: a world premiere at the St Tropez Antipodes Film Festival, official selection for the Boston Sci-Fi Festival, and four award nominations at the soon-to-be held Madrid International Film Festival. The film also won a Grand Jury Prize at the California Film Awards and will be screening at this year’s Cannes Film Festival in the Antipodes showcase.

So it’s well worth checking out when it arrives in cinemas from 28 March.

Eternity is a sci-fi mystery, set in the near future. A police detective, Richard Manning, is taking part in a futuristic computer game investigating the most difficult case of his career: a seemingly impossible locked room murder mystery of a wealthy property investor.

The more he investigates, the more complex the case seems to become. Richard begins to realize that there is far more going on than just one mystery, and his own future is at stake. His only chance to escape the game depends on him solving everything – and quickly.

Directed by Alex Galvin, the film stars Elliot Travers, Amy Usherwood, Dean Knowsley, Amy Tsang, Geraldine Brophy, Liz Kirkman, Ralph Johnson, Laurence Walls, Simon Vincent, and Jessica Manins.
