May 9. It’s not long now until we get to experience J.J. Abrams‘ second Star Trek blockbuster, Star Trek Into Darkness, in all its glory. A final trailer has been released and it’s the perfect end to a brilliant promo campaign.
Abrams continues to keep us in suspense about the villain – ex-Starfleet agent-cum-terrorist John Harrison (Benedict Cumberbatch). Who is he really?
But we now know that his lust for vengeance – for what, remains a secret – is not only directed at Starfleet but also at Captain Kirk (Chris Pine). As you’d expect, Kirk doesn’t take this lying down and sets off to bring Harrison to justice. Unfortunately for Kirk, as we see here, it’s Harrison who’s holding all the cards.
Get ready for the best ‘Woah!’ moment in a trailer this year…
Woah, indeed. That shot of the Enterprise suddenly dwarfed by Harrison’s ship sent shivers down my spine. Is it a Starfleet vessel from the future or a prototype he stole? Whatever the case, it looks like it’s been fitted with alien tech – acquired from the creatures in the trailer perhaps? Any Star Trek aficionados out there care to comment?
However, the main reason why this is the perfect final trailer is that it complements everything that has come before and we now know just enough (but not too much) about Harrison, and what he’s capable of, to be (overly) excited. Who he really is and what his motivations are is being left for us to experience in the theatre. Bravo, J.J.
You agree? And now you’ve seen all the promo, who do you think Harrison is?
With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.
Directed by J.J. Abrams, the film stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Benedict Cumberbatch, Alice Eve, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, John Cho, Peter Weller, Nolan North, and Bruce Greenwood.
Star Trek Into Darkness opens 9 May, 2013.
