The 2013 BAFTA nominations were announced last night. Steven Spielberg‘s Lincoln topped the noms with ten but faces some familiar competition for these British film awards.

Life of Pi and Les Misérables were each nominated in nine categories and Argo received seven nominations; while Zero Dark Thirty will contend the Best Film, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Original Screenplay and Best Editing categories. Predictably Bond’s latest outing, Skyfall, was also recognised – a whopping 8 nominations for 007.

For us Kiwis, the Peter Jackson produced doco West of Memphis features in the Best Documentary category and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey finally receives some love with a nominations for Make-Up & Hair, Special Visual Effects and Sound.

In a bit of a surprise, Paul Thomas Anderson‘s The Master was not nominated in the Best Film category. But the biggest surprise of the night was that Spielberg was not nominated for Best Director, despite all the nomination love poured on Lincoln – how strange!

The BAFTAs, a.k.a. the EE British Academy Film Awards, have been around since 1948 and are voted on by the 6,500+ BAFTA members – with the exception of the Rising Star Award which is voted on by the public. This year’s ceremony will be held on 11 February NZT and will be hosted by incomparable Stephen Fry.
