It’s the biggest show in town. The nominees for the 2013 Oscars (a.k.a. the Academy Awards) were announced in the wee hours of this morning. All the big names are present but there were a couple of surprises and snubs which keep things interesting – along with a rather amusing presentation by Emma Stone and Seth MacFarlane.
Predictably Steven Spielberg‘s Lincoln and Ang Lee‘s Life of Pi lead the way, with 12 and 11 nominations respectively – and no snub for Spielberg as director, unlike at the BAFTAs. Zero Dark Thirty, Silver Linings Playbook, Les Misérables, Argo and Django Unchained, which have all featured at other awards this season, also had strong showings. But despite a ten-strong Best Picture field Paul Thomas Anderson‘s The Master and Wes Anderson‘s Moonrise Kingdom missed out on selection for the big prize.
In huge snubs, Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty), Ben Affleck (Argo), and Quentin Tarantino (Django Unchained) all missed out on Best Director noms – very surprising, especially for Bigelow and Affleck, given their strong showings to this point. There’s talk the depiction of torture in Zero Dark Thirty hurt Bigelow’s chances; but I find that strange given the film’s nominated for Best Picture and a bunch of other awards.
There were some very pleasant surprises though. Two of Admit One’s favourite gems from 2012, Ben Zeitlin‘s Beast of the Southern Wild and Michael Haneke‘s Amour, are up for big awards – Best Picture, Director and Actress in a Leading Role. Beasts is a huge surprise given it hasn’t really featured this awards season – despite fully deserving to. The two films will also make history at this year’s Oscars in the lead actress category, with Emmanuelle Riva (Amour) and Quvenzhane Wallis (Beasts) being the oldest and youngest actresses ever nominated – 85 and 9 years old respectively. Both their performances were incredible. If it were up to me, they’d share the award.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey didn’t miss out completely, featuring in three “below the line” categories: Visual Effects, Makeup and Hairstyling, and Production Design. Not a huge surprise it didn’t get recognised for other awards, although I thought Neil Finn might sneak in for his end credit ditty.
Hosted by Seth MacFarlane (who was also nominated today!) the Oscars will be held on 25 February (NZT) at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles. Hopefully the show will go smoother than the new online nomination voting process – the deadline for which had to be extended due to technical issues. In some cases members of the Academy were forced to hand deliver their votes to HQ.
