Good morning. Would you like a new Man of Steel trailer with your coffee?

After two teaser trailers back in July gave us but a tiny glimpse of the man himself, the world has been holding its collective breath to see more from Zack Snyder‘s Superman franchise reboot. Well, here it is… in all its glory.

Playing more like an extended tease, this trailer finally provides a look at just how poignant, beautiful, intense and action-packed this film will be.

Henry Cavill is Clark Kent – a.k.a Superman. But the man who stands for truth, justice and the American way is struggling with his own identity and sense of purpose on his adopted home Earth; until a power-hungry enemy from his home planet Krypton shows up to lay claim to Earth, forcing Kent to become the man his father (or in this case fathers) want him to be.

In this new trailer we finally get to see Michael Shannon as chief baddie General Zod, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, and Russell Crowe as Jor-El – all looking right at home in Snyder’s beautiful yet epic take on the iconic superhero.

Now this looks like the Superman we all deserve to see. Aside from being sumptuously to look at, the film appears to tread the line between emotion and action perfectly. Characters seem real and flawed (in a good way), highlighted by Jonathan Kent’s moment of indecision as to whether young Clark Kent should have let the kids on the bus perish.

Shannon’s General Zod looks unbelievably sinister and that ship of his looks pretty badass. The face-off with Superman will no doubt be insane.

There are a couple of Matrix-mimicking moments in there, which got a head tilt from me, but I’m sure that’s more to do with the cut of the trailer than anything else.

I like that they are slowly building this film up – not giving everything away up front. It’s a lost art in Hollywood these days.

Are you ready for the new Man of Steel?

Clark Kent/Kal-El is a young twenty-something journalist who feels alienated by powers beyond anyone’s imagination. Transported to Earth years ago from Krypton, an advanced alien planet, Clark struggles with the ultimate question – Why am I here? Shaped by the values of his adoptive parents Martha and Jonathan Kent, Clark soon discovers that having super abilities means making very difficult decisions. But when the world needs stability the most, it comes under attack. Will his abilities be used to maintain peace or ultimately used to divide and conquer? Clark must become the hero known as “Superman,” not only to shine as the world’s last beacon of hope but to protect the ones he loves.

Directed by Zack Snyder, the film stars Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Kevin Costner, Russell Crowe, Diane Lane, Michael Shannon, Christopher Meloni, Laurence Fishburne, Antje Traue and Dylan Sprayberry.

Man of Steel flys into New Zealand cinemas on June 13, 2013.
