Love and class division set against the backdrop of World War II. It’s classic stuff. Our pick of the films opening today is the French romantic drama The Well-Digger’s Daughter, the debut feature from Daniel Auteuil.
Here’s the trailer:
On the cusp of the Second World War in France, 18-year-old Patricia (Astrid Berges-Frisbey) meets handsome young man, Jacques Mazel (Nicolas Duvauchelle) – a fighter pilot. They fall madly in love. However their romance is curtailed when Jacques is called to fight in the war, while Patricia finds herself pregnant and in the middle of a rift between her father (Auteuil) and Jacques’ upper-class parents (Jean-Pierre Darroussin and Sabine Azéma). The Mazels refuse to acknowledge their grandchild, accusing Patricia of blackmail. But when Jacques is reported missing, will the bond of family triumph over class division?
Directed by Daniel Auteuil, the film stars Daniel Auteuil, Kad Merad, Sabine Azéma, Jean-Pierre Darroussin, Nicolas Duvauchelle, and Astrid Bergès-Frisbey.
