The Golden Globe Awards is the second biggest awards show on the film calendar. Voted for by the 90 odd members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the awards provide a ‘preview’ of likely Oscar winners – although it doesn’t always work out the same.

This morning the nominees for the 2013 Golden Globes were announced and all the big names are present… with some of this year’s indie gems hanging in there too.

The Globes have a few quirks, the major one being that the Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress categories are divided into ‘Drama’ and ‘Comedy or Musical’. I can’t recall why – perhaps a need to be consistent with the TV section of the awards? Anyhow…

…the nominees for Best Picture, Drama are Zero Dark Thirty (most people’s front-runner), Argo, Lincoln, Life of Pi and Django Unchained Django must be good then! But don’t be surprised if Life of Pi steals Zero Dark Thirty‘s thunder – reports are that it’s amazing.

For Best Picture, Comedy or Musical the nominees are Moonrise KindgomThe Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, Les Misérables, and Silver Linings Playbook. Heart says Moonrise Kingdom but head says Silver Linings Playbook – based on its recent buzz.

Steven Spielberg‘s Lincoln leads the total number of nominations with 7. It’s most likely to win Best Actor, Drama for Daniel Day Lewis‘ portrayal of  ‘Honest Abe’. But Day Lewis faces stiff competition from John Hawkes, whose performance in The Sessions is remarkable.

Some of the other categories will be close too. Zero Dark Thirty’s Kathryn Bigelow faces off against Ben Affleck (Argo) and Ang Lee (Life of Pi) for Best Director. And Zero Dark Thirty‘s Jessica Chastain and Rust and Bone‘s Marion Cotillard fight it out for Best Actress, Drama – now that would be a great scrap! But why no nom for Amour‘s Emmanuelle Riva?

And speaking of snubs, Admit One darling Beasts of the Southern Wild didn’t get any nominations – outrageous! At the very least Quvenzhane Wallis should have been nominated for Best Actress, Drama – a staggering and emotional performance from a girl so young should not go unrecognised.

The Golden Globes take place on 13 January in the US – so 14 January for us Kiwis – and will be presented by the somewhat unusual combo of Jessica Alba, Megan Fox and Ed Helms. The good, the bad, and the beautiful. You decide who’s who.

And by the way, check out the big name actors up for television awards – showing us all just how far TV show quality has come in recent years. I’m glued to Homeland at the moment.
