Do you remember the brilliant micro-budget, sci-fi film Primer from 2004? The mind-bending time-travel flick announced the arrival of writer/director Shane Carruth – with the film winning the Grand Jury Prize for dramatic film at that year’s Sundance Film Festival.

Finally Carruth is back with his follow-up feature, Upstream Colour. By the look of these two teaser trailers, we are in for yet another mind-bending ride.

We know little about the plot at this stage. The teasers don’t give much away and the official synopsis is equally vague: ‘A man and woman are drawn together, entangled in the life cycle of an ageless organism. Identity becomes an illusion as they struggle to assemble the loose fragments of wrecked lives.

…but it sounds interesting though, doesn’t it? What is going on there I wonder.

The film premieres at Sundance in January, then opens in the US in March. Although there is no New Zealand release date yet, this is just the type of flick that might make it onto our festival circuit next year. I sure hope so. We’ll keep you posted.

Teaser 2:

“I was born with a disfigurement where my head is made of the same material as the sun.” This line from the first teaser says it all. We are in for quite a ride indeed.

Despite giving little away, the visuals in both teasers are striking and unsettling. I’m intrigued and want to know more about this dysfunctional relationship – even if I don’t like what I find.

I like indies that dare to be different, so in that regard Upstream Colour looks promising.  I just hope it’s not a film that tries too hard.
